Godansho - Godansho

A collection of tales from the late Heian period. The conversations of Oe no Masafusa (1041-1111) in his later years were transcribed by Fujiwara no Sanekane (1085-1112). Some of the writings are by other people than Sanekane. Masafusa's conversations cover a wide range of subjects, including court etiquette, Chinese poetry and prose, knowledge of musical instruments, and anecdotes about courtiers and poets. As the purpose of the collection is to memorize the knowledge that was taught to him, the expressions are brief and often incomplete, and there is no system. However, the collection also actively covers secret stories that are on the fringes of orthodox learning and history, and it gives us an insight into the interests of the intellectuals of the Insei period and the actual state of oral storytelling. Old manuscripts from the Heian and Kamakura periods preserve the dialogue and convey the original form of the story, but only a portion of them remain. The version included in Gunsho Ruiju has been reorganized into categories.

平安後期の説話集。大江匡房(おおえのまさふさ)（1041―1111）晩年の談話を、藤原実兼(さねかね)（1085―1112）が筆録したもの。一部に実兼以外の筆録も混じっている。匡房の談話は、有職故実(ゆうそくこじつ)、漢詩文、楽器などに関する知識、廷臣・詩人たちの逸話など多岐にわたる。教授された知識の忘備を目的としているため、表現は簡略でしばしば不完全であり、体系をもたない。しかし、正統な学問や歴史の外縁にある秘事異伝をも積極的に取り上げており、院政期知識人の関心の向け方や、説話が口語りされる実態をうかがうことができる。平安・鎌倉時代の古写本は、問答の体をとどめて原本の姿を伝えるが、一部分しか伝存していない。『群書類従』所収本は記事を部類改編したもの。
