A perennial plant of the Rubiaceae family. It is commonly found in forests in northern Honshu and northward. The stem is erect, 10-30 cm tall, four-sided, hairless and smooth. The leaves are thin and broadly lanceolate, with 8 pieces arranged in whorls at each node along with stipules of the same shape as the leaves. In summer, an inflorescence is produced at the top of the stem, bearing small white, funnel-shaped flowers with a diameter of about 3 mm. The fruit is cnidular.
