...Universal gained a reputation for its horror films, including Dracula (1931), directed by Tod Browning (1882-1962) and starring Bela Lugosi (1882-1956), and Frankenstein (1931), directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff (1887-1969). (See also the entry on horror films.) However, the company faced financial difficulties in the mid-1930s as a result of the global economic depression, and Laemmle was forced to resign in 1936. Later, the company escaped the crisis with the success of musical films (The Girl in the Orchestra, 1937, etc.) starring the talented singer Deanna Durbin (1921-, retired in 1948) and comedies featuring the mismatched duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello (The Ghosts, 1941, The Skiing Squad, 1943, etc.), and went on to produce the western film Sand (1939), which marked the launch of Marlene Dietrich's second career, and Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943).
