Basic Marriage and Family Law - Kihonkekkonkazokuho

In socialist countries, the family was valued as the basic cell of socialist society and was "protected by the state" (Article 53 of the 1977 Constitution in the former Soviet Union, Article 38, Clause 1 of the 1974 Constitution in the former East Germany). In conjunction with social care, family law also stipulated the obligation to support family members from the standpoint of raising children by the family and cultivating a sense of responsibility toward the family. In the former Soviet Union, the Basic Marriage and Family Law of 1968 stipulated that a spouse who is unable to work and requires assistance has the right to be supported by the other spouse who is able to support them, and that this right continues even after divorce in certain cases. It also stipulated that parents have the obligation to support their minor children (under 18 years of age) and adult children who are unable to work and require assistance.
