Seasonal calendar - Saijiki

Japanese: 歳時記 - さいじき

Also written as saijiki. A collection of seasonal themes and seasonal words from haiku poetry, organized by season or 12 months, with explanations and sample phrases. Currently, seasonal themes that are merely organized and classified without explanations are called kiyose, but in the past, the distinction was not clear. Many were also treated as appendices to etiquette books. In the early Edo period, they began with Nonoguchi Tachiha's "Hanahi-gusa" and Kitamura Kigin's "Yama no I", and later Kaibara Ekiken's "Nihon Saijiki" and Takizawa Bakin's "Haikai Saijiki" were created. Various works have been published since the Meiji period, including Takahama Kyoshi's "Shin Saijiki".

歳事記とも書く。俳諧の季題，季語を集め，季または 12ヵ月に分けて整理し，さらに解説，例句を加えたもの。現在は季題を分類整理しただけで解説のないものを季寄 (きよせ) といって区別するが，古くはその区別は明瞭でない。また，作法書などに付録的に扱われたものも多い。江戸時代前期，野々口立圃の『はなひ草』や北村季吟の『山の井』に始り，以後，貝原益軒の『日本歳時記』，滝沢馬琴の『俳諧歳時記』などがつくられた。明治以降も高浜虚子の『新歳時記』をはじめ各種刊行されている。
