chahar bagh (English spelling)

…Water drawn from various sources is generally distributed through straight channels to rectangular or square flower beds. A typical example is the Chahār Bagh (four gardens) in Iran, which divide the whole into four parts at right angles (the Patio of the Lions in the Alhambra is another example). Water features include fountains and square artificial ponds (hauds).
