Rented house - Kashiya

...It refers to a household head of the subjugated classes in early modern Japan who did not own a house, but rented a house owned by someone else and used it for the benefit of his/her residence. A synonym is rented house (kashiya) (or shyakuya), which is considered to be almost synonymous, but originally, renting a whole house was called renting a house, and renting only a part of a house was called shop renting. Like land renting, house renting and shop renting were not originally unique status or class in themselves, but rather a temporary position or state in which subjugated classes such as farmers, townspeople, and craftsmen were placed. ...
