Hainan Bay

...Population: 47,195 (1995). Facing Kainan Bay (Kuroe Bay), with the Hikata River and Kishi River basins (Nogamiya) as its hinterland, it has prospered as a commercial port since early modern times, and had many shipping wholesalers. Its main specialties are lacquerware from Kuroe and palm products from Nogamiya, and lacquerware in particular has its origins in Negoro lacquerware, and was the most important industry under the protection of the Kishu Domain.
