"The Chinese in the Sea"

...It is said that Jia Dan always met with foreign envoys and Chinese who had been sent abroad to inquire about the geography, customs, and products of those lands, and his works are the crystallization of the knowledge he gained in this way. The "Map of the Huayi in the Sea" is notable in the history of cartography for the fact that it distinguishes between the current and ancient place names in red ink and for being the foundation of grid projection, but it no longer exists, along with the 10 volumes of the "Map of the Huayi in the Sea" which are thought to include explanations of the maps. We can only get a glimpse of the original map from the few remaining stone-carved "Map of the Huayi."...
