Founded in 1987 following the division and privatization of the Japanese National Railways. Commonly known as JR Central. Operates 12 lines, including the Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokaido Main Line, Chuo Main Line, and Kisei Main Line, covering a total distance of 1,977.8 km in 11 prefectures in the Kanto, Tokai, and Kinki regions. Shinkansen accounts for over 80% of revenue. Also operates Central Towers, completed in December 1999. Shinagawa New Station opened in 2003. Head office in Nagoya. Capital in 2011 was 112 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 1.503 trillion yen.
