Born on September 22, 1851. Became a musician in the Imperial Household Ministry Gagaku Bureau in 1870. Promoted to Gagaku master in 1883, he later held the posts of Ministry of Education Music Inspector General and assistant professor at the Women's Higher Normal School (now Ochanomizu University). The song "Kimigayo" he composed in 1888 was chosen as the song to be sung on the national holiday in 1901. He passed away on March 9, 1933. He was 77 years old. He was from Kyoto.
