It refers to paintings that are painted using only light and dark tones of a single color, but does not include paintings on a gold background or drawings. The word originates from the Greek word kamai, meaning low relief. By extension, it came to mean a monochrome painting with a relief effect. The word cameo, a famous Italian ornament, also has the same etymology. The word camai became widespread after the rise of the cult of classicism, centered in France, in the early 18th century. As for the technique, a method of painting colonnades and gables in a trompe l'oeil style in murals can already be found in Vitruvius' Ten Books on Architecture, written in the early 1st century.
