His birth and death years are unknown. He is the founder of Seto ware in Aichi Prefecture. His correct name was Kato Shirozaemon Kagemasa, and he was called Toshiro. There is no solid evidence that Kato Kagemasa actually existed. The first document to mention Seto ware originated from Toshiro, and that he was the second and third Kamakura Shogun (Minamoto no Yoriie and Sanetomo) about 450 years ago, is the "Morita Kyuemon Diary" from 1678 (Enpo 6) in the early Edo period. This roughly matches the legend that Toshiro traveled to China with Zen Master Dogen, who went to Song China in 1223 (Joō 2), studied pottery techniques, and returned to Japan. It is true that Seto ware in the Kamakura period was made by copying Chinese ceramics, but the technical techniques differed from Chinese ceramics. However, archaeological surveys have shown that the period when Kagemasa entered Song China and the period when he started his kiln roughly coincide.
