Irokawa Junior High School - Irokawa Minaka
Year of death: 23rd June 1855 (5th August 1855)
Year of birth: 24 June 1801 (3 August 1801)
A scholar of Japanese classics from the end of the Edo period. His childhood name was Toyotaro, later called Hideaki, and he was commonly known as Keisuke or Saburobei. He was known by the names Tokai and Zuikaen. He was the eldest son of Hidee and Tsumatomi, drug merchants from Tsuchiura, Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture). His family was once prosperous enough to have served as a supplier to the shogunate for soy sauce, but when he took over after his father's death in 1825, the family was bankrupt, and it took about 10 years to rebuild it. After the Tenpo period, his efforts at austerity and business dedication bore fruit, and he succeeded in reviving the family business. He had to wait until his 30s to begin full-scale academic training, but he first visited Hirata Atsutane, and then in 1836 he became a student of Tachibana Moribe in Edo. He built up an extensive library and devoted himself mainly to research into the history of ancient institutions, all while juggling his family business with his academic pursuits. Although he did not show talent in poetry and prose, he made many achievements in the areas of compiling ancient documents, taxation, and weights and measures, and had a considerable influence on later scholars of Japanese classics. <Works> "Denrei Zukai Sho" ("Nihon Keizai Sosho" Vol. 32), "Katori Bunsho San" <References> Nobuhiko Nakai, "Research on the Three Middle Schools of Irokawa"
