The government office in charge of large-scale casting in the Edo period In the early Edo period, Goto Shirobei, a Kyoto engraver, was given the privilege of issuing and maintaining large-scale swords, and the Goto family inherited the role thereafter. The office was also responsible for casting and managing gold and silver-plated coppers, and for engraving sword fittings.
