Founder of the Hyderabad Sultanate (1724-1948) in the Deccan region of India (reigned 1724-48). He was a military commander in the Mughal Empire, but as the Mughal Empire rapidly fragmented and declined after the death of Emperor Aurangzeb, he established independence in Hyderabad in the Deccan, making it his capital, and calling himself Nizam.
