In 1796, Leipzig scholar Gotthelf Renatus Löbel (1767-99) began to edit and publish a Conversation Dictionary, also known as the Women's Encyclopedia, with his friend CW Franke (?-1831), to help educated people "take part in useful conversation and make use of valuable books." He died before completing the work. In 1808, Amsterdam publisher Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (1772-1823) bought the rights to the dictionary, completed it in six volumes, and reprinted it with two additional volumes (1809-11). …
