Born: March 16, 1789 in Erlangen Died July 6, 1854, Munich German physicist. Known for Ohm's law. In 1817 he became a professor of mathematics at the Jesuit College in Cologne, and in 1833 he became a professor at the Technical University of Nuremberg, before becoming a professor at the University of Munich in 1849. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Copley Medal by the Royal Society in 1841, and became a foreign member the following year in 1842. The unit of electrical resistance, the ohm, is named after him. His main work is Die galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet (1827), a mathematical study of the galvanic circuit. Ohms |
