…In the early days, Pierre Beauchamp (1636-1705) was a full-time dance teacher and choreographer, making it the cradle of dance classics. Later, Louis Pécourt (1653-1729) and Louis Dupré (1697-1774) developed the technique and style of dance, but in the 1720s, female dancers Camargo and Marie Sallé (1707-56) competed for popularity with the male dancers who had dominated until then. The ballet reformer Nover worked at the Opera for a short time, but his reforms were continued by the Gardel brothers Maximilien Gardel (1741-87) and Pierre G. (1758-1840). …
