...A general term for hydrocarbons and their derivatives consisting of polymers (C ₅ H ₈ ) _n with isoprene C ₅ H ₈ as the structural unit. Also called terpenoids and isoprenoids. A typical example is the essential oils that are the aromatic components of plants, and many pigments, resins, and gums are all formally included in the terpene category.
