...A type of stereoisomerism. In compounds with two or more asymmetric carbon atoms, isomers that differ only in the configuration of one asymmetric carbon atom are called epimers. For example, D(+)-glucose and D(+)-galactose are epimers that differ only in the configuration of C4 (Figure 1).
