A river in southern Germany. It is the largest tributary of the Rhine. It is 524 km long. It originates in the Fichtelgebirge on the border with the Czech Republic, flows through the industrial region of the Rhine-Main Plain, and joins the Rhine on the opposite bank at Mainz. The upper reaches are used for hydroelectric power generation, and it is connected to the Danube system by the Rhine-Main Canal at Bamberg, and the downstream area of about 400 km is actively navigated by boat.
