An evergreen small shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). 10-30 cm tall. The leaves are alternate, broadly linear, 1.5-3 cm long, leathery, and have curled-back edges. The upper surface of the leaves is indented with fine veins, and the underside is powdery white. In July and August, umbels are produced at the ends of the branches, and several pale pink flowers open downward. The corolla is urn-shaped, 5-6 mm long, and has five shallow lobes at the end. The pedicel is 1-2 cm long, and the sepals are pale pink. The fruit is an oblate capsule about 5 mm in diameter, facing upward. It grows in plateaus and alpine wetlands, and is widely distributed in Honshu north of the Chubu region, Hokkaido, and the cold zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Its name comes from the fact that it resembles a rhododendron, but is small overall. It is often grown in a pot with sphagnum moss for decoration. There are two species of Rhododendron found in the cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
