Born November 11, 1885 in San Gabriel, California. [Died] December 21, 1945, Heidelberg. American general. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1909. First tank commander in World War I. He advocated rapid mobile warfare using tanks. In World War II, he was a corps commander in the invasion of North Africa in 1942, and in the invasion of Sicily in 1943, he used tanks as commander of the 7th Army, capturing Palermo. From 1944 to 1945, he was commander of the 3rd Army on the Western Front, and became famous for his rapid pursuit (→Shooting and Maneuvering Tactics). Died in a car accident in Germany. His strict military discipline, fiery temperament, and self-sacrifice earned him the great trust of his subordinates, but he also received strong criticism from outside.
