West Indies [Islands] - West India

Japanese: 西インド[諸島] - にしインド
West Indies [Islands] - West India
A group of islands that stretches in an arc between the Florida and Yucatan peninsulas in North America and the northern coast of Venezuela in South America. It divides the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is broadly divided into the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and the Lesser Antilles, and includes the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. It belongs to an orogenic belt that connects to the Andes mountain range, and volcanic activity is observed. It has a tropical to subtropical climate under the influence of northeast trade winds, and frequent hurricanes. It is blessed with natural scenery such as coral reefs and tropical plants, and is famous as a producer of sugar cane, coffee, and tobacco. The name comes from the misidentification of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, where Columbus landed in 1492, as India. →Caribbean Sea →Related topics Latin America
