1703‐68 Russian poet. He studied at the Sorbonne, and after returning to Russia, he began writing poetry while working as a translator at the Academy of Sciences. In his 1735 work "New and Simple Russian Verse", he introduced various genres of classical poetry, and rejected the traditional form of Russian poetry that emphasized only syllables, instead proposing a syllabic form that also incorporated regular alternations of accents. His theory of verse was perfected by Lomonosov, and became the starting point of modern Russian poetry. He also wrote about Russian phonology and orthography, and translated works such as Fenelon's "The Adventures of Telemacha". Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
