Russian poet. He studied at the Sorbonne, and after returning to Russia, he began writing poetry while working as a translator at the Academy of Sciences. In his 1735 work "New and Simple Russian Verse", he introduced various genres of classical poetry, and rejected the traditional form of Russian poetry that emphasized only syllables, instead proposing a syllabic form that also incorporated regular alternations of accents. His theory of verse was perfected by Lomonosov, and became the starting point of modern Russian poetry. He also wrote about Russian phonology and orthography, and translated works such as Fenelon's "The Adventures of Telemacha".

ロシアの詩人。ソルボンヌ大学に学び，帰国後翻訳官として科学アカデミーに勤務するかたわら，詩を書きはじめる。1735年に発表した《新簡易ロシア作詩法》で古典主義のさまざまな詩のジャンルを紹介するとともに，ロシア語の詩としては従来の音節のみを重視する形式をしりぞけ，アクセントの規則的な交替をも取り入れた音節抑揚詩形を提唱した。その作詩理論はロモノーソフによって完成され，ロシア近代詩の出発点となった。ロシア語の音韻論や正書法についての著述や，フェヌロンの《テレマックの冒険》などの翻訳もある。
