〘noun〙① In a play, when a character speaks lines by himself, without an interlocutor, to let the audience know his inner thoughts. Also, the lines himself. Soliloquy. Monologue. ※From Edo to Tokyo (1921) by Yada Soun, 7th sentence: "There's nothing I can't stand when he looks up at the moon set on a basket and delivers a fearless and beautiful monologue ." ② By extension, when someone talks to themselves. Also, that monologue. ※We Can Never Forget (1935-36) by Takami Jun, 6th sentence: "He expresses his typical deep feelings through a monologue that sounds like him complaining."

〘名〙① 芝居で、登場人物が心中の思いなどを観客に知らせるために、相手なしで、ひとりでせりふを言うこと。また、そのせりふ。ひとりぜりふ。モノローグ。※江戸から東京へ（1921）〈矢田挿雲〉七「籠で貼った月を見上げながら大胆不敵で美しい独白(ドクハク)を述べるところなんざあ堪ったもんぢゃ有りませんと」② 転じて、ひとりごとを言うこと。また、そのひとりごと。※故旧忘れ得べき（1935‐36）〈高見順〉六「その彼らしい感慨をこれ亦彼らしい愚痴っぽい独白で現はすと」
