A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera family, Bombyliidae. The English name "bee fly" comes from two reasons: the form and color of the adult resembles that of certain bumblebees (Bombus humblebees), and the larvae parasitize the larvae of solitary bees. Approximately 3,000 species have been recorded around the world, but only a dozen or so are known in Japan. Most adult proboscises are long, as in the case of the velvet bee fly, but some species have short proboscises, such as the black-winged bee fly.
