Soil found in grasslands. Outside the world's forested areas, trees cannot grow due to dry, cold climates and sometimes excess moisture, and instead annual or perennial herbs, mainly grasses, grow over a wide area, forming a plant community known as grassland. Grassland soils are distributed over a wide area, reaching an estimated 30 million km2 , or about 25% of the land area. The world's most representative grasslands are the steppes that spread across the dry areas inside the Eurasian continent, and include the prairies of North America, the pampas of Argentina, and the pusta of Hungary.
