After a career in printing, he entered politics in 1867 when he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons. He represented a strongly pro-British Protestant group known as the Orange Order. He served as a minister in the Conservative government led by J.A. MacDonald, J.J.C. Abbott, and J.S.D.
