A post town on the Mibu Street (Nikko Reiheishi Highway) in Shimotsuke Province. It was the center of the medieval Oshiwara district, and the Mibu clan, who controlled the Kanuma clan, built a castle here in 1532 (Tenbun 1), but it fell in 1590 (Tensho 18). In 1617 (Genna 3), it was important as a transportation route for materials for the construction of Nikko, but after 1619, Utsunomiya Post Station was developed and it became a side road, and after 1646 (Shoho 3), it became important as a route for Nikko Reiheishi.
