Ion exchange resins were discovered in 1935 by the British BA Adams and EL Holmes, and were first produced industrially in 1939 by the German company IG Farben, which sold them under the name Wofatit. In 1944, American GFD'Alelio invented the resin with the current structure based on polystyrene, and chemically stable, high-performance products began to be manufactured.
