As the national consciousness that had lagged behind that of Serbia finally awakened, a national revival movement (also called the Illyrian movement) advocated by Gai and others began here in 1835. In 1842, the cultural organization Matica Ililiska (Illyrian Society, renamed Matica Hrvatska, or Croatian Society in 1874) was founded, and it enthusiastically carried out enlightenment activities that surpassed those of Serbia, and a movement to unify the South Slavic peoples, centering on publishing.
