…Northern European skiing techniques were then introduced to the Alps. At the same time, the memoirs of Francis Nansen, who had skied across Greenland, were published (English translation 1890, German translation 1891). Inspired by this, Mattias Zdarsky (1856-1940) of Austria holed up in a mountain hut in Lilienfeld and conducted repeated experiments, developing a skiing technique suitable for the steep slopes of the Alps and teaching it to soldiers. This school, known as the Lilienfeld school, used a long stick and was based on the stembogen technique (a turning technique that uses the tails of the skis to brake). …
