Bausch, P.

...A style of dance that was born in reaction to classical ballet techniques (danse classica) and is based on a completely new way of thinking. It was founded by I. Duncan and was established in Germany in the 1920s, and later developed in the United States. The term "modern dance" was coined in 1933 by American critic John Martin, who defined Duncan's free dance (also called new dance), the Neue Tanz (later called Moderne Tanz) of Germany's M. Wigman and others, and the dance of America's M. Graham and others.

He is credited with producing such outstanding choreographers of the new expressionist dance as Pina Bausch (1940-) and Reinhild Hoffmann (1943-).
