Also known as grass peat, according to the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards), it is formed when aquatic plants, mosses, and marsh grasses accumulate and undergo biochemical changes near the surface, and is common in extremely cold regions such as Hokkaido and Siberia where the period of microbial activity is relatively short. It is somewhere between wood and lignite. It is not usually classified as coal. As you move from the top to the bottom of the coal bed, it becomes a yellowish-brown porous material containing grass roots and bark, or a black-brown mud-like material. It contains a lot of water, but can be used as fuel when dried. It is also used as a raw material for producing feed for cattle and other animals.
