It can also be read as "fukusourei." The system of mourning for the Imperial Family was based on the provisions of the Taiho and Yoro funeral ordinances, while also taking into account the customs of the samurai class as times changed, and was finally finalized when the Imperial Family Mourning Ordinance was enacted in 1909. The ordinance consists of 33 articles in 4 chapters: general provisions, grand mourning, court mourning, and classification of mourning periods. In other words, the grand mourning for the Emperor of Daigyo (the honorific title used before the posthumous title), the Grand Empress Dowager, the Empress Dowager, and the Empress is called a grand mourning, and the grand mourning for the Emperor of Daigyo, the Empress Dowager, and his birth mother, the Grand Empress Dowager, is called a ryoan (a period of one year), and the mourning for the Emperor other than the grand mourning is called a court mourning.
