A city in southern Saga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. There is a plain on the Ariake Coast, but most of the area is mountainous land extending from Mt. Taradake. The city center developed as a castle town for the Nabeshima branch clan, and the Nagasaki Main Line runs through it. The plains and reclaimed land since the early modern period produce a large amount of rice, as well as mandarin oranges, tea, timber, cultivated seaweed, and oysters, and agricultural processing is also thriving. Pharmaceutical and ceramic manufacturing is also active. Yutoku Inari Shrine is located here. 112.12 km2 . Population: 30,720 (2010).

佐賀県南部の市。1954年市制。有明海岸に平野があるが,大部分は多良岳に続く山地。中心市街は鍋島支藩の城下町として発達,長崎本線が通じる。平野と近世以来の干拓地で米を多産,ミカン,茶,木材,養殖のノリ,カキも産し,農産物加工も盛ん。薬品,陶磁器製造などがある。祐徳稲荷神社がある。112.12km2。3万720人(2010)。
