A city in southern Saga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. There is a plain on the Ariake Coast, but most of the area is mountainous land extending from Mt. Taradake. The city center developed as a castle town for the Nabeshima branch clan, and the Nagasaki Main Line runs through it. The plains and reclaimed land since the early modern period produce a large amount of rice, as well as mandarin oranges, tea, timber, cultivated seaweed, and oysters, and agricultural processing is also thriving. 佐賀県南部の市。1954年市制。有明海岸に平野があるが,大部分は多良岳に続く山地。中心市街は鍋島支藩の城下町として発達,長崎本線が通じる。平野と近世以来の干拓地で米を多産,ミカン,茶,木材,養殖のノリ,カキも産し,農産物加工も盛ん。薬品,陶磁器製造などがある。祐徳稲荷神社がある。112.12km2。3万720人(2010)。
