...The area is mostly made up of lowlands in the basin of the former Hasama River, a tributary of the Kitakami River, and the northwestern part is part of the Tsuchidate Hills. It is home to the Aoshima shell mound, known as an inland shell mound from the late Jomon period. In the Middle Ages, it came under the control of the Toyoma clan, a branch of the Nitta clan, and in the early modern period it became the property of the Tsuda clan, a senior vassal of the Date clan, but in 1757 (the 7th year of the Horeki era) it was abolished and came under the control of the Watari clan. *Some of the terminology used in reference to the "Aoshima Shell Mound" is listed below.
